"Sounding Spokane"
City Snapshot, From a Planning Perspective

When architecture professor and author David Wang first arrived in Spokane in 1998, he was immediately struck by (in relative terms, he being an East-Coaster) the "regional" nature of the city - that is, how well-contained the place was within the expanses of forest, wilderness and farmlands that surround it. In his book "Sounding Spokane: Perspectives on the Built Environment of a Regional City," Dave assembled writings from a number of people - including Studio Cascade's Bill Grimes and Rick Hastings.

Bill's chapter focuses on plans and implications for major expansion of the I-90 corridor through Spokane, while Rick's documents the historic relationship of Spokane to its river, in context with current plans to tighten that relationship through the creation of a "Gorge Park," first proposed by the Olmsted Brothers' landscape architecture firm in 1908.
